Evaluating the Soil Retention of Bamboo Forests in Nantou County based on InVEST Sediment Delivery Ratio Model

參與「量化生態系統服務以整合自然於決策」研習計畫

Abstract

Bamboo forests, an integral part of Taiwan's forest resources, elicit divisive opinions regarding their soil retention capabilities. This study aims to assess the soil retention ability of bamboo forests and provide a reference for future bamboo forest development. The analysis utilizes the InVEST SDR Model, complemented by GeoDa, to examine the correlation between bamboo forests and soil retention quantities. While there is no significant spatial correlation between bamboo forests and soil retention, soil conservation of bamboo forests is still positive. Future developments in bamboo forestry could consider optimal distribution to reduce soil erosion and maximize sediment loss prevention benefits.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the following two questions: (i) Identify the hot-spot of the nutrient export in Nantou County based on InVEST Nutrient Retention Model and relevant geo-information, and (ii) evaluate the monetary value of the nitrogen retention service provided by the ecosystem service. We investigated the Nutrient Retention Effect induced by various land use and land cover in Nantou County, Taiwan. In particular, aiming to provide useful insights and information upon the nutrient retention effect of bamboo forest.

參與「量化生態系統服務以整合自然於決策」研習計畫

Abstract

In this study, the focus is on exploring the adaptation of ecosystem services and the supply capacity of bamboo forests in Nantou County. The aim is to comprehend the carbon storage levels in bamboo forests, the distribution of bamboo culm accumulations, and variations in bamboo shoot yields By quantifying these variables in terms of monetary value, the research seeks to assess the ecosystem service capabilities of these bamboo forests Ultimately, the study aims to propose strategies for the future management and cultivation of bamboo forests in Nantou County.

參與「量化生態系統服務以整合自然於決策」研習計畫

Abstract

This study uses commentary and value determination to quantify the social value of bamboo forest attractions in Nantou County, and uses gravity models to study differences between townships. Finally, we found that the social value brought by bamboo forest attractions had high scores in the western half of Nantou, indicating that the bamboo forest attractions in the western half of Nantou County had a significant development.

Abstract

Elevated CO2 and decreasing pH in the ocean make the calcification of coccolithophores more energy consumption. Emiliania huxleyi (E. hux.), the most abundant coccolithophore in the ocean, is a crucial contributor to C cycle. Based on previous research, Zn is known as a key cofactor in carbonic anhydrase which is used for the transformation of different inorganic carbon species. The experiment is designed to exam the effects of elevated CO2 (or pH) on the growth rate and cellular metal quotas of E. hux.

參與「氣膠重金屬組成及在海水中的循環過程」研習計畫

Abstract

Aerosol organic acids may enhance aerosol metal solubility during transport process in the atmosphere. Dissolvable aerosol metals is considered to be bioavailable to marine phytoplankton. Besides, organic acids also can act as a nutrient source for marine heterotrophic bacteria. In this study, I have attempted to establish an HPLC method to measure aerosol organic acids by using HPLC and to quantify their concentrations in size-fractionated aerosols collected from Matsu island during winter and summer monsoon seasons.

The Influence of Light Intensity and Siderophore on Aerosol Trace Mental Solubility in Seawater

參與「氣膠重金屬組成及在海水中的循環過程」研習計畫

Abstract

Aerosols settling into seawater can release trace metals that are utilizable by phytoplankton. However, the mechanisms by which light exposure affects aerosols remain unclear. Additionally, the presence of organic ligands in the ocean, which can influence the solubility of trace metals, adds complexity to the situation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of light intensity and iron carriers on the solubility of trace metals in seawater. The research findings revealed that, whether in seawater with or without iron carriers, aerosols released almost identical concentrations of trace metals under illuminated and non-illuminated conditions.

Using Machine Learning Models to Predict Summer Maximum Temperatures in Taiwan through Global Sea Surface Temperature

參與「以氣候數據分析了解臺灣氣候變化」研習計畫

Abstract

This study employs Python scikit-learn machine learning models, including linear regression and random forest, to predict the average summer (June, July, August) maximum temperatures (predictand) for regions in Taiwan below one thousand meters in elevation. The predictions are based on detrended and anomaly May global sea surface temperature (predictor). A comparison is made between the predictions using global sea surface temperature with and without performing empirical orthogonal function analysis (EOF). In addition, we conducted predictions of categorical types of the following summer (i.e. hot anomaly/normal/cool anomaly). The Python SHAP module is utilized to analyze key features employed by the models as primary predictors. Finally, the overall performance of the prediction models is calculated using K-Fold cross-validation.
