Ozone is a key constituent ofthe stratosphere. The shortwave heating by ozone influences the stratosphericcirculation, and the circulation, in turn, influences the distribution of ozone. This creates the potential for an interesting interaction between ozone and thecirculation, which may also be important for the surface because of the downwardcoupling from the stratosphere into the troposphere. Here, we use observationsand modeling to study the ozone-circulation interaction and the role of it forextreme stratospheric circulation events. We find that extreme stratospheric circulationevents create significant and long-lasting perturbations in ozone over both theArctic and the tropics. From simulations with a simplified chemistry-climatemodel, we find a positive feedback, in which anomalies in ozone and thecirculation reinforce each other to prolong the anomalies and their effects onthe surface. We conclude that interactive ozone is important for predictingclimate on sub-seasonal and longer time scales.
